6. Reinventing the business for a sustainable future ? manufacturing moving offshore

  • Manufacturing Business
  • Overseas-owned
  • Australian-based with 500 employees

This business was undergoing significant change with the manufacturing base moving off-shore to China. Duet Consulting was engaged by the CEO to work directly with the leadership team to identify the change issues impacting them, and then to recommend actions.

The CEO was also concerned about the negative effects of ongoing down-sizing; overseas business unit competition for the company’s Australian jobs and markets; resultant anger and “blame culture"; and a sense of “helplessness” within the leadership group at all levels.

The major intervention was the facilitation of a two-day workshop where the leadership team “reinvented” their business model and made key decisions for the business going forward. The workshop was designed to include theory and coaching on change management so that the senior team could effectively lead change across their organisation.

The outcomes included their “reality-check” and reassessment of the firm’s future, through the facilitation of a more open exploration of the positive alternatives for the Australian operation. They shifted their strategy from manufacturing to Intellectual Property, R&D and Sales emphases, and a renewed sense of hope and commitment emerged.

One year on, this Australian business unit controls an entire global product, from design to production to sales, and is planning local manufacturing growth to a size previously not conceived even before the crisis.
